Vicimeter CM-2018 Clamp Meter Field Operation Guide: Analysis of 8 Typical Application Scenarios

The Vici CM-2018 is a multi-functional clamp meter that measures AC/DC current, voltage, resistance, capacitance, temperature, frequency and duty cycle. It comes with practical features including LoZ low-impedance voltage mode, LPF low-pass filter and NCV non-contact voltage detection. It is widely used for home electrical installation & maintenance, factory equipment servicing and automation commissioning. Below are 8 typical practical operation cases to help users get started quickly.

1. Core Feature Overview

  • Clamp Jaw: Supports AC & DC current measurement and NCV non-contact voltage sensing. Built-in work light for operation in dim environments.

  • SELECT/LPF Button: Short press to switch between resistance / continuity / capacitance modes. Long press to activate low-pass filter, specially designed for inverter output measurement.

  • LoZ Low-Impedance Voltage Mode: Effectively eliminates phantom induced voltage on wiring to ensure safety during power-off maintenance.

  • HOLD Button: Freezes readings, turns on screen backlight and clamp jaw flashlight.

  • Rotary Function Dial: OFF for power off, plus current, voltage, resistance, temperature, frequency & duty cycle ranges.

  • Test Lead Terminals: COM = black common terminal; VΩ = red test lead terminal.

2. 8 Typical Application Scenarios

Scenario 1: Air Conditioning Operating Current Test

For troubleshooting non-cooling, frequent tripping and abnormal outdoor unit noise. Turn the dial to AC current range, remove test leads, and clamp only the live wire of the outdoor unit (clamping live and neutral wires together will cancel the reading). Record stable current value. A 1.5HP air conditioner normally runs at 5–7A. Readings far above the standard value indicate compressor seizure or blocked pipeline. Fluctuating current usually points to degraded run capacitor.

Scenario 2: Inverter & Servo Motor Output Measurement

Ordinary multimeters show wildly fluctuating readings when measuring PWM waveforms from variable frequency drives. Switch to AC voltage mode, long press SELECT/LPF to enable low-pass filter. It suppresses high-frequency carrier harmonics to capture true fundamental voltage, helping distinguish inverter mainboard failure from motor coil short circuit.

Scenario 3: Power-off Voltage Verification & Phantom Induced Voltage Identification

During old house rewiring and ceiling wiring, ordinary meters often read 30–80V induced voltage after power cut, making it hard to confirm true live status. Use LoZ low-impedance voltage mode for measurement. Reading near 0V means it is harmless phantom voltage. If tens to hundreds of volts remain, the upstream breaker is not fully disconnected, presenting electric shock hazard.

Scenario 4: NCV Non-contact Cable Tracing & Breakpoint Location

Turn rotary dial to NCV sensing mode. Move the clamp jaw along cables, conduits or walls. Audible and visual alarms trigger when approaching live wires. Where the alarm stops is the cable breakpoint. Ideal for hidden wire fault finding without accessible wall sockets.

Scenario 5: Socket Leakage Troubleshooting

For frequent RCD tripping or tingling metal socket housings. Under current range, clamp live wire and neutral wire separately. In a healthy circuit, live and neutral currents should match. If live current exceeds neutral current, the difference equals earth leakage current. Clamp the earth wire separately: any current flow means equipment housing leakage.

Scenario 6: Motor Temperature Rise Test

Switch to temperature mode, connect the supplied thermocouple probe and attach it firmly to the motor casing or terminal copper bar for temperature reading. Continuous operation over 80°C for general motors usually indicates worn bearings or coil overload.

Scenario 7: Capacitor Degradation Test

Troubleshoot flickering LED lights, failed charging piles and abnormal fan speed. Switch to capacitance mode. Connect red and black probes across capacitor terminals (fully discharge capacitor first). Compare measured value against rated capacity. Replace if deviation is excessive.

Scenario 8: Frequency & Duty Cycle Measurement

For industrial control signal commissioning, solenoid valve and pulse signal maintenance. Under voltage mode, short press to toggle Hz frequency / duty cycle. Connect probes to control signal wires to read pulse frequency and verify PLC output status.

3. Safety Warnings

  1. Remove test leads before current measurement. Inserting leads while measuring current will cause short circuit and burn the meter.

  2. Rated maximum 600V CAT II. Do NOT use on high-voltage switchgear cabinets.

  3. Disconnect measurement circuit before rotating function dial. Avoid switching ranges on live circuits.

  4. Regularly clean metal debris from clamp jaws; otherwise current measurement error increases significantly.

  5. Fully discharge capacitors before testing to prevent residual electric shock or instrument damage.

4. Target Users

  • Residential / property electricians: AC current test, hidden wire tracing, safe voltage check, capacitor inspection

  • Automation & equipment maintenance engineers: LPF filter for inverter test, pulse & frequency commissioning, motor temperature measurement

  • Electromechanical repair apprentices: Multiple functions integrated in one unit to cut tool procurement cost

The Vici CM-2018 clamp meter leverages two differentiated functions — LoZ and LPF — to solve two common pain points: phantom induced voltage and unstable readings on inverter outputs. Suitable for both residential power distribution and industrial automation. It is a highly practical portable troubleshooting tool.
